TRAINING PROGRAMS

2009 International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Internship Awards is now open and the deadline for submissions is September 12, 2008. These 1 year research intern positions will start on January 1, 2009. Please see the website for eligibility details, in particular that
"Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and citizens of developing countries may submit an application."  The Ecosystem Approaches to Human Health Program Initiative is hoping to host one of the interns.  For other awards/scholarships offered by IDRC please visit the IDRC Training and Awards Program's website.

The Earth Institute at Columbia University has opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.

For working with mentors at the DOE National Laboratory or Global Change Research Institution apply for the Graduate Research Environmental Fellowship (GREF).

International development research is funded through a variety of mechanisms by Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC).

Graduate Assistantships are available for the MS and PhD Environmental Science degree programs at Washing State University's Vancouver campus. 

The Quadrant Project, an initiative of the University of Minnesota Press and the Institute for Advanced Study at the UM will fund four external fellowships for 2008-09 with focus on the areas of Design and Architecture, Environmental Sustainability, Global Cultures, and Health and Society.

Fellowships in Environmental Journalism at Middlebury are one year in duration and include a $10,000 stipend for expenses.

The Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Graduate Fellowships within the Policy and Global Affairs Division of the National Academies is designed to engage graduate science, engineering, medical, veterinary, business, public policy, and law students in the analytical process that informs the creation of national policy-making with a science/technology element. As a result, students develop basic skills essential to working in the world of science policy.

SHORT TERM PROGRAMS

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's (GSFC) Earth Sciences Division is offering a limited number of graduate student research opportunities through its Graduate Student Summer Program (GSSP). This program is designed to stimulate interest in interdisciplinary Earth sciences studies by enabling selected students to carry out an intensive research project at GSFC's Earth Sciences Division.

Goddard Earth Science and Technology Center (GEST) Graduate Student Summer Program in Earth System Science (GSSP)

Alaska Foundation Conservation Internship Program is specifically targeted toward undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent grads who plan a career path in conservation and are willing to make a long-term commitment to preserving and protecting the pristine environment and diverse cultures of Alaska. 

Alaska Conservation Foundation small grant program for projects 1-2 months and requiring less than $2,500.

The Transatlantic Renewable Energy Exchange with CDS is a 3 month summer paid internship program in Germany.

Partial scholarships for courses on Complex Systems held are offered by the New England Complex Systems Institute (NECSI).


DISCCRS (pronounced "discourse ") is an inter-disciplinary initiative for recent Ph.D. graduates conducting research related to climate change and itsimpacts. The goal is to broaden research interests and establish a collegial peer network extending across the spectrum of natural and social sciences, humanities, mathematics, engineering and other disciplines related to climate change and its impacts. The initiative includes a public webpage, electronic newsletter, and annual symposia funded through 2008.

The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) runs and funds a 3-month Young Scientists Summer Program near Vienna, Austria, for grad students.

The National Science Foundation sponsors the East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) Program, which offers U.S. graduate students in science and engineering a unique opportunity to study abroad with foreign researchers (in Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, or Taiwan) for 8 weeks during the summer. In 2008, the EAPSI awards included a stipend of $5,000, an allowance for international travel, and support to attend a pre-departure orientation in Washington DC. Foreign co- sponsoring organizations will provide additional support to cover EAPSI students' living expenses abroad.

UNDERGRADUATE

"Opportunities for Enhancing Diversity"  to provide a year long mentoring program for Undergraduates,  preferably students of diversity (in the geoscience, diversity is defined as African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders). Yet, all exceptional student are welcome.  This includes a field course at Storm Peak this summer and a trip to Howard University's campus next winter.  The students will be paid a stipend for their time and all travel expenses are covered.

GENERAL FELLOWSHIPS

The Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists are seeking applicants an Applied Epidemiology Fellowship program for those interested in working in state and local health departments.

Udall Environmental Public Policy & Conflict Resolution Dissertation Fellowship - awards two one-year fellowships of up to $24,000 to doctoral candidates whose research concerns U.S. environmental public policy and/or environmental conflict resolution and who are entering their final year of writing the dissertation.

Organization for Tropical Studies Research Fellowships Program OTS fellowships are open to graduate students enrolled in degree programs at OTS member institutions.

The Smithsonian Institute sponsors a variety of fellowships and programs for research and study.  In addition there is the
Smithsonian Environmental Research Center's Internship Program in Environmental Studies.

Dept of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship

Resources for the Future (RFF) Fellowships and Internships promote research and policy analysis in RFF's discipline fields by supporting work at colleges, universities, and other institutions, both in the United States and elsewhere, and by bringing researchers to RFF to contribute to projects underway and to the formulation of new lines of inquiry.

The Knauss fellowship, established in 1979, provides a unique educational experience to students who have an interest in ocean, coastal and Great Lakes resources and in the national policy decisions affecting those resources. The program matches highly qualified graduate students with "hosts" in the legislative and executive branch of government located in the Washington, D.C. area, for a one year paid fellowship.

Russell E. Train Fellowships for Students from Mozambique

The Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program "provides support for up to three years of formal graduate-level study leading to a masters or doctoral degree. Fellows are selected from countries and territories in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and Russia, where the Ford Foundation maintains active overseas programs. U.S. nationals are not eligible, although Fellows may study in the United States."

The Wildlife Habitat Policy Research Program (WHPRP) requests proposals due in December.

Policy opportunities in Washington DC, are offered by the AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships.

Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation Grants offers amounts up to $10,580 each (the cost of building the Spirit of St. Louis in 1927).

The National Security Education Program (NSEP) provides money for grad and undergraduate study in countries outside of Western Europe.

The Wildlife Conservation Society is inviting applications for a Research Fellowship Program for grants up to $25,000 for one year.  Deadline in March.

Consider Nature Conservancy's Conservation Science Internships for a research project planned or underway in an area where TNC works.

The Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research grants up to $5,000 for "exploratory field studies for the collection of specimens and data and to provide the imaginative stimulus that accompanies direct observation."

Annie's Sustainable Agriculture Scholarships distributes a pool of $50,000 each year to full time undergraduate and graduate students beginning or returning to an accredited 2 or 4 year technical or college program or graduate school in the U.S..

American Association of University Women (AAUW) offers women's Career Development Grants and International Fellowships.

NSF IGERT China Associate Grants (up to $4,000 each for travel and research in China-NW Yunnan that will support the objectives of the grant for U.S. citizens in MSc and PhD programs), for 2008 will give preference to UW-Madison students, but others may also apply.  Contact Dr. Teri Allendorf, Program Manager.

Pfizer is sponsoring a 2 year Fellowship Grant for post-doc researchers in Health Disparities.

The David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellowship Program established by the Nature Conservancy provides 2 years of support for work in the US.

The University of California system offers the Chancellor's (Berkeley campus only) and Presidential (Statewide) Postdoctoral fellowships.

The National Science Foundation supports a minority fellowship with funds for supporting activities, including international research and collaboration.
