Who we are

Edouard Kouassi

Edouard Kouassi is Associate Professor in the Department of medicine, Faculty of medicine, Université de Montréal. He is also a Researcher in the Immunology/Oncology group of the Research Center of Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital, Montreal, and a Researcher in the Biological and PsychoSocial Signatures of Mental Health group in the Fernand Seguin Research Center of Louis-H. Lafontaine Hospital, Montreal. He is the Coordinator of an ongoing project of a Psychiatric Biobank in the Fernand-Seguin Research Center.

Dr. Kouassi has taken the first intensive course in Ecosystem approaches given in 2008 at Vancouver, BC, Canada by the Canadian Community of Practice in Ecosystem approaches to Health (Co-PEH-Canada), and he is currently an active member of the Quebec-Acadie-Atlantic node of CoPEH Canada. His main research interests cover the molecular mechanisms of brain-immune connections in physiology and pathology, including the effects of environmental toxins such as mercury and agricultural pesticides on the immune defence mechanisms. He is collaborating with colleagues in Benin (West Africa) to investigate the environmental and health impacts of household solid waste burning in Cotonou, the biggest city in Benin. He co-authored a review paper on the structural and functional complexity of the immune system and its relationship to immunotoxicology (In Investigative Immunotoxicology, Taylor and Francis Publishers, New York, 2005), and he has peer-reviewed publications in Biological Psychiatry, The Blood journal, Brain, Behavior and Immunity, The Journal of Biological Chemistry, Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, Stroke, etc…

Dr. Kouassi received his B.Sc. degree in pharmacy, and his Ph.D. degree in pharmacology from Université de Montréal. He received a second Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Université Claude-Bernand Lyon 1 (France). He did his post-doctoral training in immunology with Pr. Jean-Pierre Revillard (INSERM U80, Lyon, France).
