Associate Professor Pierre Horwitz is the Director of the Consortium for Health and Ecology at Edith Cowan University in Western Australia . He is also the establishing Manager of the Sustainable Communities Network, a cross-sectoral and transdisciplinary operation of the Health Inequalities Research Collaboration, funded by Australia's Department of Health and Ageing. Dr Horwitz' research experience, published in over 70 refereed papers and 7 monographs, covers the biodiversity and health of inland aquatic ecosystems, environmental policy (in the areas of forests and wetlands), and issues of science and trust in government processes. Dr Horwitz has a particular interest in socio-ecological approaches to the relationship between human health and the health of their surrounding ecosystems. He has a Ph.D. in Zoology ( University of Tasmania ). Dr Horwitz has been a Director of the Australian Bush Heritage Fund (1999-2002) and President of the Australian Society for Limnology (1998-2000). He serves on the Editorial Board of two journals, has convened or co-convened 6 provincial or national conferences in the last 10 years, including the 2002 IndoPacific Ecosystem Health conference (addressing the linkages between ecology, participation, health and justice). Dr. Horwitz has also convened special sessions in national or international conferences, leading to published proceedings as special issues in selected journals.
