Shuyi Zhang, Ph.D.

Dr. Zhang received his Ph.D. in behavioral ecology and tropical ecology from the University Pierre & Marie Curie in 1994, and he worked on the behavioral ecology of primates and plant-animal coevolution in primary forest of French Guiana for two years. He returned to China in 1995 and, since then, has worked primarily on bats, including behavioral ecology, conservation biology, molecular phylogeny and bat-virus coevolution. Since the outbreak of SARS, he was engaged by China's government to investigate the natural reservoir of the epidemic in May, 2003. Dr. Zhang has been extensively published in internationally recognized journals including Nature and Science. His current research interests include the relationships between SARS-like CoV and bats, between rabies and bats, between Japanese Encephalitis viruses and fruit bats etc. He has established extensive and close collaborations with virologists and epidemiologists from the department of microbiology at Hong Kong University, Institute Pasteur in Paris, and diverse institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
